History: |
Work started on the building in 1913 and completed in early 1914.
Building cost amounted to $38,000.00. On January 1, 1914, Colonel Cruikshank, Commanding Officer of M.D.#13 officially took over the Red Deer Armoury (the original usage of the building). Lieutenant Govenor Brett unveiled the Roll of Honor at the Armouries on February 3, 1916.
The Great War Veterans Association took over the building in November of 1918. Many dances were held here after it was no longer an armoury and the Red Deer Health Unit used it for Vaccination Clinics. It is now one of Red Deer's Fire Halls. The original site of the armouries was supposed to be in the middle of the East end of the city block, as the militia wanted, but the City had it located in the Southeast corner. A fairly big political struggle accompanied the construction of this building. |
